Studios Apartments for Hotel Tenants!

The "Sister Bernie Galvin Residence" is opening in October!

Back in 2002, the Central City Collaborative organized with hotel residents to get the "Fourth and Freelon" project approved at the Board of Supervisors. Tenant testimonies and a petition drive convinced the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors to allow the project to move forward so that 56 studios would be built for folks living in residential hotels. This successful organizing will come to fruition on October 15th when the "Sister Bernie Galvin Residence" opens at 7th and Brannan Street. To inquire about moving into this new affordable housing development, please contact the Central City SRO Collaborative at 775-7110.

Current Campaigns

Save the Civic Center Hotel!

Tenants in SROs and low-cost apartments are being threatened with demolition and eviction as landlords try to increase profits by building more expensive apartments that are not rent controlled. The SRO Collaborative is working to preserve 140 units of affordable housing at the Civic Center Hotel on Market Street. Call our office or drop by to get involved in this important campaign. 775-7110

Currently we are working to get the Board of Supervisors to pass a resolution to call on the Plumbers Union Pension Fund which owns the building to preserve this essential low-income housing, protect the tenants from eviction and perform mandated earthquake retrofits.

Eradicating Bedbugs!

Tenderloin tenants lobbied and won $63,000 in this year's budget for subsidized laundry and freezing services for low-income tenants with bedbug infestations, a huge public education campaign for tenants and landlords, and 2 annual forums--one for landlords/tenants and one for social service workers/tenants--that will teach public health code, bedbug cleanup, and tenant advocacy.
